Highlights of Beauty and the Breast 2013
IT WAS A VERY HAPPY SWEET PINK 16 for the 2013 Beauty and the Breast event. On Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, the Anita Salas Memorial Fund, in collaboration with the Central New Mexico Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, presented Beauty and the Breast 2013. The 16th annual breast cancer Educational Seminar, held at the Isleta Resort, Albuquerque, New Mexico, was a big success with over 500 participants mingling with over 60 health fair vendors and attending sessions about breast cancer in New Mexico presented by New Mexico physicians with experience treating the people of our state. The topics were related to current trends in breast cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship in New Mexico, focusing on educating the attendees about relevant phases of breast health.
Highlights of the educational event included a Keynote Address by Larry Dossey, MD, renowned physician and author of The Power of Premonitions: How Knowing the Future Can Shape our Lives, Healing Words: The Power of Prayer and the Practice of Medicine, and many other books. Dr. Dossey spoke to a rapt crowd about "Premonitions -Their Implications for Consciousness, Health, and Preventive Medicine". As a special bonus for the participants, Dr. Dossey premiered his new book, One Mind, and generously took time to speak with the group after the event and sign books for the attendees.
The event also featured a panel of exceptional cancer experts, moderated by Melanie Royce, MD; including Anthony Miller, MD, Sandra M. Mueller, MD, PhD, Jane Kanowitz, MD, Calvin Ridgeway, MD, and Amit Garg, MD. The panel discussed applied aspects of breast cancer treatment and offered the audience a chance to participate by asking questions relevant to our community and lives. In addition to our successful panel discussion, two presentations related to integrative medicine and cancer screening educated our audience about the importance of health and wellness. Dr. Arti Prasad's (UNM Center for Life) presentation on Integrative Oncology and Breast Health was informative and offered the audience and introduction into alternative methods of promoting breast health. Dr. Brian Potts (High Resolution Women's Imaging Center) discussed Breast Cancer Screening: 15 Minutes That Can Save Your Life featuring the importance of cancer screening using mammograms and presenting information on breast cancer and how mammograms have proven to aid in diagnosis. All sessions were well received by the audience, with an interactive exchange of ideas and questions between presenters and participants, providing everyone with informative and educational material relevant to breast cancer in New Mexico.
Our Women's Health Fair was very popular this year with over 60 healthcare organizations and local artisans offering participants therapeutic massages, flu shots, blood pressure and glucose screenings, women's wellness consultations, acupuncture, beauty aids, hand-crafted jewelry, and artwork. Local agencies and organizations representing services supporting breast cancer patients were also part of our special day, providing valuable information and resources to our participant community.
Proceeds from the 2013 event benefit the Anita Salas Memorial Fund. Established in 1996, the ASMF has helped over 1700 women receive valuable and much needed cancer services and care.
